Friday the 13th – Is It REALLY a Bad Luck Day?
You're probably already aware, but just in case you're not, today is FRIDAY the 13TH! AHHHHHHHHH! Calm down, calm down, there's nothing to be afraid of...or is there? Friday the 13th is one of the superstitious days of the year, no matter WHAT months is happens to fall in.
Some people will go so far as to alter their ENTIRE routine just so they don't have any "unfortunate accidents" do to increased sense of foreboding and fear associated with today. Paraskevidekatriaphobia, is defined as the morbid, irrational fear of Friday the 13th, is affects MILLIONS of people around the WORLD!
According to urbanlegends.com, "while consistently fewer people chose to drive their cars on Friday the 13th, the number of hospital admissions due to vehicular accidents was significantly higher than on "normal" Fridays. Their conclusion: "Friday 13th is unlucky for some. The risk of hospital admission as a result of a transport accident may be increased by as much as 52 percent. Staying at home is recommended."
A classmate of mine when I was at the University of Southern Indiana, Mandy Konrad, would lock herself in her dorm, call off work, and skip classes on every Friday the 13th! I always thought that was a bit excessive, but who am I to judge? Maybe she was on to something...
