Warrick County School Calendar Changes Coming Soon

The other day, my daughter, who is a Warrick County School Corporation student, came home and told me that next year the school calendar will be changing in a big way.

I didn’t get any notifications about these changes, though it’s entirely possible that they sent out an email and I missed it. I do have about 20,000 unread emails in my inbox right now. What? I’m busy, okay! So, I figured there might be some parents out there who weren’t aware of next year’s changes either.

Fall Break Will Be a Full Week

According to the calendar posted by the Warrick School Corporation, Fall Break will be extended to an entire week in the 2026–2027 school year. This was approved in May of this year though I didn't see anything about it in the school board meeting minutes.

Currently, Fall Break is October 10–13 (Friday through Monday), but next year it will run from October 12–16, which is Monday through Friday.

How Will They Make Up the Days?

This year, the school year will end on May 20, but next year it has been extended to May 25.

Back when my other daughter was in school, I remember the start date was always the second Wednesday in August. I distinctly remember her starting on the 15th back in 2012, but somewhere along the line, the start date moved up to the first Wednesday of the month. Though the number of instructional days doesn’t change, the calendar always seems to shift.

Why Schools Adjust Their Calendars

In some parts of the country, school corporations have moved to a balanced calendar. That means two-week breaks in fall, winter, and spring, with a shorter summer break.

Though some parents welcome a more balanced schedule to help reduce burnout and summer learning loss, many working parents find it harder to manage childcare when breaks are scattered throughout the year. One study even found that balanced calendars can hinder academic growth instead of helping.

My Take on the Change

Personally, I’m not a fan of school systems inching toward a balanced calendar. I’d rather have a long summer than a week-long fall break. But since it’s happening, I guess it’s time to start planning a family vacation now!
