Southern Comfort Food at Robert's by the River

This week, we checked out Robert's by the River, a new restaurant that's been making waves since opening a few months ago. I hadn't been there before, but I’d heard great things about the staff. Conveniently, since our studios are downtown Evansville, I could walk right over. The restaurant is located in the Hadi Shrine building, and while many think you need to be a Hadi Shrine member to dine there, it’s actually open to the public.

When we arrived, we were seated at a table overlooking the patio. It was undergoing a bit of a refresh, but that shouldn’t stop you from coming in and trying the food.

This Isn't Robert's First Rodeo

Owner Robert Russell has been in Evansville’s restaurant scene since his teens, with his most recent venture being The Sandbox. Now, he’s rebranded in the Hadi Shrine building, but the quality of the food and the attentive service remain top-notch.

Robert’s menu focuses on "Southern Comfort" food—think dishes your grandma might have made, but elevated. There's also a salad bar and a range of specials.

We started with a variety of dishes to try.

MEATLOAF & MASHED POTATOES

I had the meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and collards. The meatloaf was fantastic—well-seasoned and not greasy. Robert mentioned the bourbon glaze is housemade, not just ketchup, and it really made a difference. It was sweet, tangy, and had a subtle bourbon kick. The collards were flavorful without being overly salty, and the mashed potatoes complemented the meal perfectly. And can we just take a moment to appreciate Robert's attention to detail with all the garnishes?

PORK STEAK, BAKER, & FRIED OKRA

Next up was the pork steak, baked potato, and fried okra. This was a crowd favorite. Most places serve dry pork chops and I'm not sure why because a pork steak is much more tender and flavorful. The pork steak with baked potato and fried okra followed. The fried okra was crunchy and well-prepared, adding a nice touch without being slimy or overly vegetable-like for those who aren't a fan of the greens.

FRIED CHICKEN, MASHED POTATOES WITH GRAVY, & CORN

Then came the fried chicken, which turned out to be my favorite of the day. I usually enjoy fried chicken but don’t go out of my way for it. However, Robert’s fried chicken was exceptional. It’s brined before coating and frying, which makes a huge difference. The chicken was moist, and the coating was perfectly crispy.

Pair it with mashed potatoes and corn—and it's definitely a southern treat.

FRIED CATFISH FILLETS, SLAW, & FRIES

Another standout was the catfish with slaw and fries. The catfish was light, flaky, and free from any muddy taste. The cornmeal coating was crispy, and the homemade tartar sauce was a great match. The slaw was tangy and fresh, and the crinkle-cut fries and hush puppies were delightful. If you are a big fan of fish, every Friday, Roberts hosts a fish fry from 4-9 with all-you-can-eat fillets for only $13.

CLUB SANDWICH

Finally, I had the club sandwich. It was everything you’d want in a club—whole grain bread, fresh meats and cheeses, and vibrant veggies. Add your favorite sauce, and you’ve got a lunchtime classic.

Overall, Robert’s by the River lived up to the hype with its comforting southern fare and excellent service. If you’re in Evansville, it’s definitely worth a visit.
