4th of July Was My Favorite Holiday as a Kid
When I was a kid, the 4th of July was my absolute favorite holiday, right up there with Christmas. Our longtime neighbors, Tim and Janie Cecil, would open up their classic car barn and decorate it with red, white, and blue. They’d host this huge potluck, and everyone would bring potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans, watermelon, and a huge array of desserts. We’d eat until we were stuffed.
Food + Swimming Was a 4th of July Tradition
They’d also let all the neighborhood kids swim in their pool. This was a HUGE deal since they were the ONLY ones in the area with a real pool. We’d stare at it all summer from our tiny three-foot Intex pool across the street. The pool was amazing, I can still remember how the slick liner felt under my feet, and the water was always just the perfect temperature. But honestly, the real highlight was the fireworks.
Our town didn’t have a fireworks display back then, so getting a real show was huge. And Tim and Janie always delivered. It was pure magic.
Those are some of my favorite childhood memories.

Now WE are the Fireworks Friends
Now, as an adult, we’re the ones hosting the 4th of July bash. Since my husband works as a fire protection specialist, and his good friend owns a local pyrotechnics business, we’re the ones trying to make the 4th unforgettable for our friends, family, and neighbors who don’t mind the big booms.
Luckily, there are also lots of local fireworks displays around the tri-state for all families to enjoy. Here are the best ones around the tri-state. If you would like to add another to our list, just email me here!
