Massive FDA Recall Over Rodent Droppings Only Impacted One Indiana Store
FDA Finds Unsanitary Conditions at Gold Star Distribution
According to the FDA, conditions inside the Gold Star Distribution Inc. facility were anything but clean. Inspectors found evidence of rodent urine and feces along with bird droppings in areas where products like medications, food, cosmetics, and even pet food were stored and then shipped out to stores across the country.
Because of this, items held at the facility are considered contaminated. Handling or consuming them could pose serious health risks, including salmonella and leptospirosis.
Health Risks Linked to the Contamination
Salmonella Symptoms to Watch For
Salmonella can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In more severe cases, it may lead to arterial infections, endocarditis, or arthritis.
Children, pregnant people, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of serious illness or complications.
Leptospirosis Symptoms Explained
Leptospirosis symptoms may include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, vomiting, and diarrhea. According to the CDC, some people experience a second phase that can involve kidney or liver failure or even meningitis.
