Photographer Captures Haunting Beauty of Abandoned Indiana Schoolhouse
The Oak Grove School in Jay County, Indiana was built in 1913. Over 100 years later the school is still standing (at least partially) and is now abandoned. It is an often photographed building, but I can't say that I've ever seen it quite like this.
Jason Kindred is a professional musician turned professional photographer. He is the owner of Aphonic Poetry Images and he captured some beautiful pictures of this once-proud schoolhouse - some are colorful and vibrant, some are dark and bleak, and some are just plain breathtaking.
I can't seem to find any early photographs of the school, but I can imagine how glorious it was 100 years ago. Even in its current state of disrepair, you can see the detail and craftsmanship that went into building it.
The most notable feature is the school's tower, not only because it is so beautiful, but also because it is still standing more than a century after being built.
Another reason this particular school seems to be so interesting is its location, which is out in the middle of a field. I mean, there are a few trees in the immediate vicinity, but for the most part, that school is the only thing out there.
More About the Photographer
The schoolhouse pictures are definitely interesting, as is the man who took them. As I mentioned earlier, Jason Kindred - an Indiana boy - is the owner of Aphonic Poetry Images. He does some amazing work, but photography is a rather new occupation for him. We shared a few messages on Facebook, and that's where he told me...
I'm almost 50 years old and I have found a completely new passion. For years I've been the singer in a signed touring band. The older I get, the less appealing it is to drag a thousand pounds of gear around the country and overseas. I would rather just drag around a camera.
