Short Film Shot at a Southern Indiana Horse Stable to Premiere in Newburgh

A few months ago, my sister-in-law sent me a Facebook post about a local short film casting call, and the role sounded like it was made for me: a woman in her 40s, over 5'7", and comfortable around horses.

I gathered my audition materials and reached out to the director. Unfortunately, the part had already been filled, but he kindly offered me another role—and an extra part for my daughter.

The director sent me the script for "Goodbye," which follows Annabelle, a young person struggling with grief, who finds hope in riding horses at a stable. I was all in. When I asked where they’d be filming, he said Double M Stables—where we actually board our horse.

Director John Bosley chose Double M for its welcoming atmosphere. “The owner, Kim [Gilkey] has a heart for helping young people learn to ride, especially those who are struggling, so filming here felt perfect.”

Since it was a short film, we wrapped up filming in just a couple of days, and it was such a blast. The cast was mostly young actors—some experienced with horses and others who had never ridden before. John focuses on projects that give youth and young adults opportunities to shine in front of the camera.

Now, Bosley is relocating his family and business to the area. While he seeks investors for bigger projects, he plans to produce more smaller films like "Goodbye."

"Goodbye," featuring Newburgh actress Arianna Pettitt, will premiere at New Life Church on October 12, 2024. This free event will also accept donations to help cover medical costs for Carla Martin, the secretary of North Castle Middle School, who recently underwent heart surgery.

Typically, a film premiere wouldn’t double as a fundraiser, but the star of the film suggested this approach. “Carla always had a smile on her face and helped put smiles on the kids' faces,” Arianna shared. “She’s really nice and cares for all the kids at school.”

Bosley added, “I’ve always been impressed with Arianna’s compassion. So when asked to use the premiere for a fundraiser, it felt like the right thing to do.”

Arianna emphasized the film's message: “People might be going through a lot, and you never know how they feel. It’s okay to cry, and you’re never alone.”

In addition to "Goodbye," Bosley will also screen "Child of the Crimson Skye," which he previously showcased in Newburgh last May. Arianna stars as Lydia, the lead role in this post-apocalyptic tale where an orphan must navigate treacherous mountains while being pursued by a dictator's army.

Bosley believes there’s a strong need for films that convey hope, faith, and compassion, quoting "Crimson Skye": “Hope still lives in the hearts of those who dare to believe.”
