Back in 2009, we weren’t ready for the ice storm. Our power went out and didn’t come back for a week. Thankfully, my husband’s parents were out of town, so we were able to stay at their place during that time. And then in the 90s, my family and I went without power for an entire week during a big weather event. It was rough, even though we had heat and three meals a day, thanks to my resourceful mom. So, to those local folks who are enduring life with no power right now, my heart goes out to you. I've been there - not only does it suck but it can be dangerous with these temps.

How Many Homes Are Without Power?

Right now, there are 1,519 outages and 29,532 Southwest Indiana homes and businesses are without power, and CenterPoint Energy had released a statement last night that left a lot of people worried they wouldn’t see power until the end of the week. But today, they shared the news that additional aid crews and support have arrived in the tri-state to help with restoration efforts.

To our customers in Southwestern Indiana: Significant restoration efforts continue as damage assessments are ongoing. We've restored 42,000 customers since Sunday afternoon and have approximately 29,000 left. Additional mutual aid crews and support continue to arrive to help reach substantial completion of restoration by Friday close of business. -Facebook

In an email to users, CenterPoint mentioned that about 500 additional support personnel are arriving to the tri-state, bringing the total number of workers to around 900.

When Will Power Be Restored?

CenterPoint reiterated that most homes' and businesses' power should be restored by Friday but many customers would have power before then. They reported that they will provide more specific restoration times by end of the day today.

Based on current weather forecasts of extreme cold for the rest of the week, CenterPoint expects to substantially complete restoration for customers who can receive service by the end of the day, Friday, January 10. However, most customers will be restored before then, and more specific estimated times of restoration will be provided by end of the day, Tuesday, January 7. -centerpointenergy.com

Check Your Home First

They also posted this to social media about what you need to look for at your home.

To our customers in southwestern Indiana: As restoration work continues, it's important for those still without service to check for damage to the weatherhead and meter can. The weatherhead is the point where power enters the home or business through an overhead electric service drop running from the pole to the building, while the meter can houses the electric meter. If you find damage to either of these, a qualified electrician will need to make the necessary repairs before service can safely be restored.
