Severe Weather Risk Increased for Evansville Area Ahead of Overnight Storms

Severe Weather Risk Upgraded for Evansville and Southwest Indiana

I was just thinking this morning about how we really haven't had any major storms this year. And since we were only on the outer edge of the system that's about to hit Indianapolis, I wasn't too concerned.

Well, I should have known better.

The National Weather Service has just upgraded our area's severe weather risk.

Evansville Area Upgraded to Enhanced Risk

Earlier this week, we were sitting at a Level 1 (Marginal Risk). Then we were bumped up to a Level 2 (Slight Risk). The Owensboro area remains under a Slight Risk, but the Evansville Tri-State area has now been upgraded to a Level 3 (Enhanced Risk).

There's also a Wind Advisory in effect through sunset across much of the region.

Severe Storms Expected Tonight

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop late this evening and continue overnight. Severe storms are possible, especially across southwest Indiana, southern Illinois, and northwest Kentucky.

Timing of the Storm

According to the latest forecast, scattered thunderstorms are expected to spread southeast across the Interstate 64 corridor and the Evansville Tri-State area between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m.

The main threats include:

• Damaging winds
• Tornadoes
• Large hail
• Flash Flooding Possible Overnight

Flash Flooding Risk

Heavy rainfall rates could also lead to flash flooding across portions of southwest Indiana tonight into early Thursday morning.

A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for parts of the area, so be prepared for rapidly changing conditions if heavy rain develops.

More Severe Weather Possible Thursday

Unfortunately, tonight's storms may not be the end of it.

Scattered to numerous thunderstorms are possible Thursday afternoon across southeast Missouri and much of western Kentucky. A few of these storms could become strong to severe, bringing:

• Damaging wind gusts
• Heavy rainfall
• Frequent lightning
