In 1492 Columbus Sailed the Ocean Blue

We've all heard the old rhyme "in 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue."  When Columbus set sail in 1492 he had three ships that embarked on this journey.  The ships used for this journey were the Niña, Pinta, and Santa Maria all of which were a type of ship called a Caravel.

Step Back in Time 

Something really unique will be docking in Evansville this May.  A replica of the Pinta will be docking at the Nu Plaza Yacht Club from May 18th through the 22nd.  This replica has been called a "floating museum."   What's really unique is how this ship was built.

Per the press release sent out by Nina Pinta Caravels:

 In 2005, the Pinta was Launched in Brazil after 3 years of Construction. The Ship was built by 8th Generation Portuguese Shipwrights using the same methods and hand tools that were used to build the original in the 15th Century. The Pinta was the first Ship to sight land on the famous voyage of discovery on October 12th, 1492. Historians consider the “Caravel” the space shuttle of the 15th Century and was used as early as the 13th Century and into the 16th Century. The Caravel was mainly used as a typical trading vessel along the Mediterranean and African Coast before being used for Transatlantic Voyages to open up new trading routes all over the World.

The Pinta replica will be open for tours daily from 9A to 5P and you don't need reservations.  You can purchase tickets at the ship for $8.00 for Adults, $7.00 for Seniors/Military (65+), and $6.00 for Children (5 - 16).   Children 4 and under are Free.
