During the Apollo 14 mission to the moon in 1971, astronaut Stuart Roosa carried a canister of seeds. Upon return to earth those seeds were germinated and planted around the world. According to NASA, there were hundreds of seeds that were eventually germinated after returning to Earth and they were then planted around the country to commemorate the bi-centennial of the United States in 1976. While there were no official records kept by NASA as to the exact locations of these Moon Trees, it is believed by the space organization that 4 of those trees are currently growing and thriving right in our own backyard. Just how close to Evansville? How about Tell City and Lincoln! Both just about an hour away from Evansville. There are 2 Sweet Gum trees in Tell City at the Forest Service Office that are believed to have been grown from seeds from the Apollo 14 Mission. There is also a Sycamore tree in Cannelton at the Camp Koch Girl Scout Camp and 2 more Sycamores at the State House in Indianapolis and Lincoln State Park in Lincoln City. What a cool and exciting notion that there are trees that went to the moon in 1971!
