Gabby, thanks for taking time out of your nesting schedule to chat with us. Let’s start with the basics—why the Owensboro Health Regional Hospital Mother/Baby courtyard?

Gabby: Where else would a goose go to deliver? The name says it all. I’ve been coming here since 2019, and officially nesting here every spring since 2021. It’s peaceful, protected and full of friendly faces. Plus, the courtyard has excellent nesting vibes.

We heard you changed up your spot this year. Any reason?

Gabby: Gotta keep things fresh. I usually nest closer to the front, but this year I shifted a little farther back in the courtyard. Still prime real estate. A mom needs space, you know?

Do the staff know when you arrive?

Gabby: Oh, absolutely. First sighting and they’re like, “Mother Goose is back!” Mindy Jones—she’s the Nurse Manager—always gives everyone a heads-up and even lets security know so they can lock the doors. I appreciate the privacy. Nesting is personal.

What about the patients—do they see you out there?

Gabby: All the time. Folks walking by the courtyard will stop and point me out. I’m practically a celebrity. And when the goslings hatch? Let’s just say it draws a crowd.

What happens after the goslings are born?

Gabby: Around April 19–23, my little fluffballs hatch. Then the wildlife folks come to help relocate us to one of the water features on campus. But last year? I left early and met them there. I’m no amateur—I know where we belong.

What do you think goes on inside the hospital?

Gabby: From what I’ve observed through the windows—and trust me, I watch everything—it looks like a place where people come to heal, rest and meet new life. Some folks are there to welcome babies, others are fighting through tough days. Either way, there’s a whole flock of people inside helping them through it.

Let’s talk about your reputation—particularly for causing traffic jams.

Gabby: Look, geese have the right of way — we’re a protected species. It’s in the Bird Code. Yes, I’ve been known to waddle across the main entrance during peak hours. But honestly, it builds character. People need to slow down and admire nature... even if nature is me standing in the road for five full minutes.

Any favorite hangout spots when you’re not nesting?

Gabby: Oh, the area outside the cafeteria is *chef’s kiss.* People drop all kinds of things out there—chips, fries, sandwich crusts. I’m not saying I’m picky, but if you drop a cracker, I will find it.

Favorite snack?

Gabby: Dandelions for health. French fries for joy.

Biggest pet peeve?

Gabby: People who walk too close to the nest. You will get honked at. And if I’m feeling feisty, maybe a little chase. It’s not personal—it’s parenting.

You’re kind of a local legend. How does that feel?

Gabby: Honored. I may just be a goose, but I remind people that life keeps showing up, year after year, in the most unexpected places. And like the families the hospital cares for every day—I come here to deliver something precious.

Final question—will we see you again next spring?

Gabby: You bet your tail feathers you will. Just watch out in the parking lot.
