Read Meek Mill’s Full Statement After Being Released From Prison
Around 4 PM Eastern it was revealed that Meek Mill's legal nightmare was over and he would finally be freed an hour later on bail after more than five months behind bars following a Supreme Court hearing. The Philly rapper posted a lengthy statement reflecting on his situation to his social media accounts minutes after his imminent release.
He began thanking those in his corner for their continued support throughout the entire process. "I’d like to thank God, my family, my friends, my attorneys, my team at Roc Nation including Jay Z, Desiree Perez, my good friend Michael Rubin, my fans, The Pennsylvania Supreme Court and all my public advocates for their love, support and encouragement during this difficult time," Meek expressed.
The 30-year-old referred to his latest jail stint as a nightmare but his spirit remained positive. "While the past five months have been a nightmare, the prayers, visits, calls, letters and rallies have helped me stay positive," he wrote and later thanked the Philly D.A.'s office. "To the Philadelphia District Attorney’s office, I’m grateful for your commitment to justice – not only for my case, but for others that have been wrongfully jailed due to police misconduct."
Meek concluded that he has plans to spotlight other cases similar to his that may not be receiving as much media attention. "Although I’m blessed to have the resources to fight this unjust situation, I understand that many people of color across the country don’t have that luxury and I plan to use my platform to shine a light on those issues. In the meantime, I plan to work closely with my legal team to overturn this unwarranted conviction and look forward to reuniting with my family and resuming my music career," the "All Eyes On You" rapper explained.
Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin broke the news of Meek Mill's pending freedom on Instagram, admitting he was on the way to pick up his imprisoned friend with comedic superstar Kevin Hart. Rubin later said it's "more likely than not" that the Philly MC would be attending tonight's 76er home game at the Wells Fargo Center.
