The University of Southern Indiana is expanding, adding a charter school just about as far away from Evansville as possible while still being in the Hoosier State. Ha! The brand new Williams Arts and Technology Academy (WATA) is set to open in Fort Wayne starting with the 2027–2028 school year. It’s an exciting step forward for innovative education in Indiana!

What Is WATA And What Will It Offer

WATA will kick things off by serving kindergarten through third-grade students in its first year, with plans to grow over time. The school is expected to welcome around 120 students and will focus on blending arts and technology into a unique, engaging learning experience designed to meet the needs of today’s students.

How USI Supports Charter Schools

As a charter school authorizer, USI doesn’t run the school day-to-day, but it does carefully review applications, set high academic standards, and monitor performance to ensure students are getting a quality education. Since becoming an authorizer in 2021, USI has made it clear that it’s committed to supporting schools that bring fresh ideas and strong academic vision to the table.

Community Input Shapes The New School

According to USI leadership, the decision to approve WATA came after a thorough review process and valuable feedback from the community. That local input played a big role in shaping the school’s direction – something organizers say will continue as they move toward opening day.

Leaders at WATA are grateful for the support and say they’re excited to keep working with families and community partners to build something special. Their goal is to offer another strong educational option for parents and create a learning environment where kids can truly thrive.
