It’s that time of year when we all want to get outside and clean up the yard. My husband likes to throw it in my face every year that I said I wanted a house with “mature trees.” Well, we live in the middle of the woods. I do love the trees, but keeping them from burying us in leaves in the fall is a full-time job. And we both have full-time jobs, so they end up just becoming a nice leaf carpet around the house.

Why You Should Wait to Clean Up Leaves in Spring

The good news is our lack of time and energy is actually really good for the environment. Fallen leaves act as insulation for many pollinators and other tiny creatures that make our ecosystem thrive. When you rake or blow off leaves, you lower their chances of survival.

The 50 Degree Rule for Leaf Cleanup

There is a really simple rule to follow about when you can move your leaves. According to Gardening Know How, “The rule is simple: wait for daytime temperatures to remain consistently at or above 50°F for at least 7 consecutive days before you pick and dispose of leaves.”

They go on to explain that most of our beneficial insects go by this schedule to wake up. They wait for consecutive days of warmth to emerge from diapause or insect hibernation.

What’s Hiding in Those Leaf Piles

There are also other little treasures hiding in the leaves. I saw a video over the weekend that was just incredible, because I have probably seen this before and never really knew what it was, so I just tossed it aside. Turns out, when you find a little leaf ball, there is a treasure inside.

Gigi’s Garden Gifts posted the video showing a little leaf ball, and they explained that when it warms up, the tiny treasure inside becomes a lunar moth.

The Short but Beautiful Life of the Luna Moth

Lunar moths are absolutely beautiful, but their lives are kind of sad. When they hatch in the spring, they only have about a week, if they are not killed or eaten first, to go find a mate.

According to National Geographic, they do not even have a mouth to eat. They rely completely on the energy they stored during their caterpillar phase.

The Most Unhinged Hacks to Save Money

I’ve always been a thrifty person, even when people make fun of me for it. Lately, though, my money saving habits might be crossing into unhinged territory. From reusing everyday items to keeping a very well loved car on the road, these are the real ways I save money without pretending it’s cute or trendy.
