Loving Pets, Having Many of Them

If you’re anything like me, you’re an animal lover. And you might also be like me and have pets—yes, *plural*. I started with one cat, and not even eight months later, I somehow had two. And let’s not even talk about the day I move into a bigger place where I can finally have a dog. You get the point: I love pets and would happily have an endless supply if life allowed it.

The Holidays Get Busy… For Everyone

But life gets busy. And during the holidays? It gets *extra* busy. Living three hours away from my family has really made me stop and think—not just about my own schedule, but about my pets too. I’m not the only one surviving the holidays… Penny and Pepper are right there with me.

Why Traveling With Pets Isn’t Always the Answer

I’ve taken two cats on a road trip in carriers before, and let me tell you—it wasn’t pretty. My pets do NOT travel well. Unlike my parents’ dog, who is ready to jump in the car the second a door opens, my cats would much rather stay home. And honestly, I respect that. Their home is their comfort zone.

Their First Christmas Feels Extra Special

This is Penny and Pepper’s very first Christmas, and seeing their matching “P” stockings hanging up brings me so much joy. I can’t wait to give them their presents (yes, my cats get gifts), but it’s also made me think more carefully about what they need while I’m away.

Leaving Cats Home for the Holidays

I’ve done my research, and cats *can* be left at home for short trips as long as they have plenty of food, fresh water, and a safe environment. That said, cats are curious creatures. They climb, explore, and get into things they absolutely shouldn’t.

That’s why, as cozy as it feels to leave the Christmas tree lights on, it’s probably not the safest idea for cats while you’re gone.

Simple Ways to Keep Cats Safe and Happy

A few small adjustments can make a big difference:

  • Automatic feeders and water fountains
  • Turning off tree lights before leaving
  • Tucking away cords, tinsel, and breakable ornaments
  • Leaving favorite toys, blankets, or even a shirt that smells like you

What About Dogs During the Holidays?

Dogs usually need a little more attention. If you’re traveling, having a trusted pet sitter, boarding facility, or a friend stop by can help keep their routine as normal as possible. Enrichment toys, puzzle feeders, and special holiday treats can help keep them calm and entertained.

Don’t Forget to Include Them in the Fun

If you’re staying home, include your pets in the holiday cheer. Extra playtime, new toys, festive bandanas, or simply relaxing together during a holiday movie night can mean everything to them.
