Exploring Indiana

I've lived in Evansville, Indiana for my whole life.  Living here in the little southwestern corner of the state, I'm ashamed to say there's so much of Indiana I haven't explored.  Here in Evansville, we are so close to the Kentucky border that I spend more time in Kentucky and Tennessee than I do in the northern parts of Indiana because parts of those states are closer than the northern parts of my own state.    So I got to thinking, what if I wanted to take a road trip to explore Indiana, what would be the best way to do that?  Well, one option could be to take a trip up Indiana's longest road.

The Longest Road in Indiana

The longest contiguous road in the state of Indiana is U.S. 231 it spans the entire length of the Hoosier State and runs through 14 different counties.  The Indiana portion of U.S. 231 is 297 miles long.    You can hop on U.S. 231 in Rockport and drive it all 297 miles until it ends in St. John which is near Crown Point.

You Have Probably Driven on U.S. 231

Whether you realize it or not, if you're from the Tri-State area, you've probably driven on U.S. 231 at some point.  U.S. 231 runs through Owensboro, and if you've ever driven across the William H. Natcher bridge to cross from Owensboro into Rockport, you've been on U.S. 231!

According to DB Pedia, most of U.S. 231 is a two-lane highway, so this is a drive you'll probably want to take leisurely.

  • U.S. Route 231 (US 231) in Indiana is a main north–south highway in the western part of the state. The southern terminus of US 231 is at the Kentucky state line and the northern terminus is at US 41 just south of St. John. The highway is a mixture of expressway and two-lane roadway. The expressway portions exist mainly in southern Indiana and around the Lafayette area, with the rest mainly being two lanes. (en)
