May 20th is National Rescue Dog Day, which according to NationalDayCalendar.com is "a day to recognize all the benefits of allowing a four-legged canine to adopt you into their immeasurable lovable life." I've got to say, I agree with that statement.  I've got two rescue dogs of my own, and they have brought so much joy to my life.

I adopted my first ever rescue dog, Wrigley (tan one above) when she was just 8 weeks old. She had been rescued by Animal Control from a pretty bad situation, where her litter and several other dogs were kept in a very small outside kennel. Another Chance for Animals took in Wrigley's mom and the litter of pups, and that's how I found her.   Then there's George (brindle one above) who my husband and I adopted when he was 6-months old.  We aren't too sure of his story of how he came to It Takes a Village, but we know he had pretty severe mange. Looking at him now you'd never know.  Wrigley is 7 now, and George is just shy of turning 4, and I wouldn't trade them for anything.  So it's safe to say I'm a pretty big fan of rescuing.

Rescuing also quite literally saves lives. Did you know that according to the ASPCA each year approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters?  And of that 6.5 million, 1.5 million of those animals will be euthanized?    Both of those numbers are entirely too high. So with the help of people making the conscious decisions to spay and neuter their pets, and consider rescuing their next pet, we can help make those numbers go down.

Here's some great places to rescue your next best friend in the Tri-State!

If I forgot any, don't hesitate to let me know (email Melissa@103gbfrocks.com)! I'm happy to keep this list updated!
