The calendar says, "October," however the temperatures during this week's Fall Festival suggest, "June" which means t-shirts, shorts, and for some, open-toed shoes, such as sandals, is the wardrobe of choice. However, those open-toed shoes won't allow you or your child to enjoy at least one attraction in the Midway.

I learned this lesson the hard way Monday evening while taking my 10-year-old daughter around to ride a few rides. She spotted the Funhouse in the back corner of the West Branch Library yard, and decided she wanted to run through. As we approached the entrance, there hung a sign that read, "Open-Toed Shoes Not Permitted." I don't have to tell you what she was wearing.

I asked the ride attendant if she could just go through barefoot, and the answer was, "No," which made sense. I wasn't given an explanation as to why the policy existed, but I assume the concern is shoes getting hung up on a step, or simply sliding off all together.

Thinking quickly, I improvised and came up with a solution that allowed her to run through the attraction —

Granted she looked like she borrowed a pair of clown shoes from the Hadi Shrine Funsters, but it worked. She got to enjoy the Funhouse, and I stood in the grass in just my socks for all of 45 seconds. No harm, no foul.

I didn't see any other rides or attractions that featured the open-toed shoe policy (there may be some in the "Kiddie Ride" section next to Smitty's on the corner of Franklin and 10th Avenue), but considering the Funhouse is one of those features that kids of all ages can enjoy, I wanted to make sure you were aware before you ran into the same situation I did.
