Your Designer Coffee Might Be Laced With Uber Gross Bacteria
According to a BBC Watchdog Investigation in the UK, ice from three large coffee chains in the UK including Starbucks is contaminated with fecal bacteria.
Yes, you read that correctly. The ice that goes into your iced coffee could be contaminated with poop particles.
During the investigation in the UK, experts allege that they found an alarmingly high number of the bacteria in the ice as well as around the insides of the stores in general. This includes on trays, tables, and high chairs. No amount of fecal bacteria is appropriate for consumption, let alone the numbers they found on the ice.
At Starbucks specifically, 3 out of 10 randomized samples were found to contain fecal coliforms. Starbucks has since released a statement in which they say they are conducting an internal investigation to corroborate or dispell these findings and plan to continue to conduct training practices to eliminate contamination threats. However, none of these types of tests have recently been conducted in the United States, although it's very likely that similar findings could be found here as well.
So in short, don't order iced coffee anymore. Just kidding! Do whatever you want. If you want to play Russian roulette with your coffee drinks, that's your choice. Personally, I'll stick to hot coffee or water.
