The Trotter House Offers Pregnancy and Parenting Support to the Evansville Community [EVENT]
Thirteen years ago, I remember feeling off. I didn't know why but I just felt it. So, I took a pregnancy test and to my utter shock and disbelief, I saw a little blue line which meant... pregnant.
Learning that you are pregnant with your first baby really puts you in a state of shock, running the whole gamut of emotions in about three minutes. Life speeds up and slows down at the same time. And, even though I was married and had a full support system at work and through my family, I was terrified. But having that support system made all the difference. I can't imagine going through pregnancy alone.
According to guttmacher.org, research that was done in 2010 concluded that 49% of all pregnancies (55,000) in Indiana were unintended. And, in 2013, 437,410 Indiana women aged 13–44 were in need of publicly funded family planning services.
What is Trotter House?
In Evansville, both women and men can find pregnancy support services at The Trotter House. The Trotter House is a faith-based organization that offers specialized programs and services to assist women and families who find themselves in an unplanned pregnancy or difficult situation.
Some of the services they offer are:
- Pregnancy tests
- Sonograms
- Pregnancy consulting and counseling
- Healthy lifestyle coaching
- Infant supplies
- Life skills program
- Healthcare referrals
- Adoption referrals
According to Lori Devillez, "Trotter House is such an important service in our community because so many families are in great crisis. We are able to serve our clients, free of charge, and offer a foundation for developing a Life Plan and working that plan with them through Life Skills Classes. With our Life Skills classes, we are able to offer the much-needed resources they need. We are more than "a hand out," we are a hand up with equipping them to sustain themselves and their families."
I asked Lori why she got involved with Trotter House. She told me that she got involved because she saw Trotter House making a huge difference in the lives of those in need in our community.
If we want things to change for the better then we must get involved and make that difference in the lives of others.
So, if you think or know you are pregnant and need some assistance, what's the first step?

Lori told me that the process is simple when you come in. "When someone comes to Trotter House for help they are first greeted with a smile and we let them know we are so very glad they have come. We take them to one of our Life Skills rooms and spend time getting to know them and their needs. We offer them a bottle of water and food, as many come to us hungry. As we visit and learn their needs we are able to develop a Life Plan with them and begin to learn how we can assist them to obtain the help they need. We follow up with them to ensure they know they have loving support."
How Can You Help?
