Why Baseball Is on My Summer Bucket List

With the weather warming up more and more each day, people are finally getting outside again, and I'm so here for it. Every summer, I make a mental “bucket list” of fun things I want to do, and one thing that always makes the list? Catching a baseball game.

We usually head to an Evansville Otters game, but every now and then, we manage to squeeze in an MLB game. I’ll be honest, I’m there for the hot dogs, cold beer, and the atmosphere. Baseball’s fun, it doesn't have the action of basketball, soccer, or even football. So, the game itself is (gasp) kind of secondary for me.

But there's one baseball game that would not only catch my attention but would hold it too!

What Is Banana Ball? The Savannah Bananas' Wild Take on Baseball

The Savannah Bananas, based in Savannah, Georgia, are an exhibition team that plays a fast-paced, entertainment-first version of the game called Banana Ball.

Think of it like baseball, but with a twist: faster rules, more excitement, and a whole lot of fun. Every game is a full-on show, complete with trick plays, choreographed dances, and tons of fan interaction.

Each game is unique. Sometimes, the players hit the field wearing kilts (shoutout to the AAGPBL gals who also had to slide in that thing), other times, they’re on stilts or weaving through the crowd to bust out a line dance. According to the team's website:

“When we score, you never know what will happen next.”

History of the Savannah Bananas

Back in 2015, Savannah, Georgia, and Historic Grayson Stadium lost their minor league baseball team for the first time in nearly 90 years. It was a huge blow to the local sports scene. Team owners Jesse and Emily Cole initially tried launching a summer college team, but it didn’t quite catch on.

Then came 2016 and a total rebrand. Enter: The Savannah Bananas.

They promised fans a baseball experience unlike anything they’d ever seen: all-inclusive food, a senior citizen dance team, a "Banana Baby", and wild, high-energy exhibition games. It worked. They sold out opening night… and then every single game after that, both home and away.

Honestly, I get the hype.

So Popular, It’s Like Trying to Get Taylor Swift Tickets

Banana Ball has blown up. Every game sells out, and most of their 2025 season sold out during the first ticket drop back in November. It's that popular.

Now, if you were thinking, "Hey, these guys sound awesome and I wanna go," well you are in luck. Back in 2020, the Bananas debuted their second team, The Party Animals and they are coming to Kentucky this June. You might be able to score tickets.

Now, before you go clicking around trying to grab tickets, slow your roll. It doesn’t work that way. You can’t just buy tickets. You have to join their ticket lottery list, and if you’re selected, you’ll get an email with a special link to purchase tickets when they drop.

Moral of the story? If Banana Ball is on your summer bucket list, you better get on that list now or you’ll be stuck watching the madness from ESPN.
