Avoid Holiday Headaches: Here’s a List of Major Retailers That Are Charging for Returns
Online Shopping Is Easy Until You Need a Return
As much as I wish I could say I only shop small and local, online ordering is just easier. And my family takes the Christmas list seriously. They want exactly what’s on the list, and if you stray even a little, there’s a good chance you’ll be asked for the receipt.
My One Holiday Shopping Mistake
Most of the time, I stick to the big retailers. Last year, though, I decided to be thoughtful and order Taylor Swift records my daughter wanted from eBay. I sell on eBay and Poshmark myself, so it felt like a win-win. Support a small seller like me and get her the gifts she wanted...
What I didn’t realize was that even though I bought Taylor’s Version, there were multiple album covers. I ordered the wrong one. Because the records were purchased on eBay, they were non-returnable. Lesson learned the hard way. Drats.
This year, I’m sticking with the big retailers. But even that comes with a catch. Stores like Amazon and Walmart offer plenty of fully returnable items, but they also sell marketplace products. Those can come with shipping fees, restocking charges, and return policies that feel a little wild.
Why Return Policies Matter More Than Ever
That’s why I decided to make a list of return rules and check it twice. Knowing which retailers charge return fees and which ones don’t can save you money, stress, and a post-holiday headache.

And my list of easiest places to return (if you know the rules).
1. Amazon
Most items sold by Amazon can be returned within 30 days of delivery for a refund or replacement, subject to condition and eligibility. Some items are not returnable. Amazon Return Policy Overview
2. Walmart
Walmart accepts most returns within 90 days of purchase or receipt. Some categories (like electronics, phones, appliances, or Marketplace items) may have shorter windows and exceptions. Always check before you buy. Walmart Standard Return Policy
3. Target
Target offers free and convenient returns, with most items returnable within 90 days. Target-brand products and registry purchases may have longer windows; some categories like electronics have different rules. Target Return Policy
4. Best Buy
Best Buy has a defined return window that varies by product, generally 15 days for most purchases, with holiday extensions and member benefits affecting timing. Some items (like activatable devices) have shorter windows and restocking fees can apply. Best Buy Return & Exchange Policy
5. The Home Depot
Most merchandise can be returned with proof of purchase within 90 days. Exceptions apply depending on product type and condition. Home Depot Return Policy
6. Costco
Offers a “satisfaction guarantee” with no strict deadline for most items. Electronics have a recommended 90-day window. Costco Return Policy
7.Sam’s Club
Most items can be returned with no firm time limit (electronics are an exception at 90 days). Sam’s Club Returns
Maybe I should just make my own gifts this year and avoid all this hassle! Haha!
