An Estimated 24% of Americans are Polyworkers and I’m One of Them
What is Polyworking?
Did that title grab your attention? It grabbed my spellcheck's attention too. It said, hey-o "polyworkers" isn't a real word! But the term is growing. Polyworking refers to a person working multiple jobs - some even managing to hold two full-time jobs concurrently.
While I don’t juggle two full-time jobs, I do have one as a regional editor (for this company) and several side gigs. I write for horse magazines, bartend, flip clothes and shoes, and help with my daughter’s small business. Oh, and I’m a full-time mom. Thankfully, none of my side hustles require set hours.
How Many People Have Multiple Jobs?
According to SideHustles.com, 24% of Americans have multiple jobs, and over half say it’s due to the rising cost of living. Interestingly, 3 in 5 polyworkers hide their second jobs from their primary employer, and 1 in 3 remote workers juggle side gigs.
I posted about polyworking on our Facebook page, and many shared their stories. Sherry Kowgitz Withers shared that she has consistently worked two jobs, with one at the YMCA, where she receives a free family membership. At the YMCA, she works around six hours a week managing their seven white buses and spends another four hours weekly behind the Wellness desk. She has been with the YMCA for 20 years, previously serving as a lifeguard for 15 years. Cathy Davidson shared that she has two full-time management roles. She does one during the day and one overnight.
Do Polyworkers Feel Overwhelmed?
Many polyworkers enjoy their side jobs, but nearly half (49%) report feeling overworked, with 48% struggling to find time for personal life or family. Women are particularly likely to have multiple jobs, possibly due to factors like lower wages or single-parent responsibilities. While the extra work can bring financial relief, it can also lead to burnout and stress.
I Want to Polywork - Where Should I Start?
If you’re thinking about polyworking, be sure to talk with your current employer. Surprisingly, 3 out of 4 managers are okay with employees having side jobs, as long as they’re honest and still meet their primary responsibilities.
It's also important not to bite off more than you can chew. Start small - flip some clothes on Mercari or Poshmark or find a non-commital job with a catering company or subbing in the school system. Just make sure you give both jobs your all but don't burn yourself out. And remember - there are NO legitimate get-rich-quick schemes. It's all about that hard work, baby!
