New ‘Logan’ Instagrams Feature a Moment of Violence and a Moment of Silence
Have we mentioned that the official Logan Instagram is gorgeous? Have we said that enough? Because it is, and two new photos show off a couple more small details of the film. We’ve seen the trailer, and while it’s in color and not black and white like the Instagram account, I certainly hope that the movie keeps some of the atmospheric-ness of its photos to give us a more contemplative superhero movie that the Instagrams hint is possible.
First, a photo captioned, simply, “Bullet,” shows a car riddled with holes from some really scary weapon: that cluster in the foreground looks like buckshot. Which would fit with the film’s rural Texas setting. We don’t know whose car this is, but hopefully those bullets stay away from the gas tank.
Next, we have today’s, titled “Worn.” These are definitely Wolverine’s hands — if you look closely, you can see the scars where his claws come out of his knuckles and retract. This is definitely an older, more ragged Wolverine than we’re accustomed to seeing.
Director James Mangold said that his would be a different kind of superhero movie, and, in particular, that it wouldn’t be too faithful to Wolverine’s insta-healing powers he has in the other X-Men movies. When this Logan gets hurt, it leaves a scar:
One of the things we all thought about as we worked on this film is, well, we don’t want to rebuild everything. We want to have some questions. In order to make a different Logan, and a different tone of a Wolverine movie, we felt like we couldn’t hold on to every tradition established in all the movies religiously, or we’d be trapped by the decisions made before us. So we questioned whether Logan’s healing factor causes him to heal without even a scar. We imagined that it may have when he was younger, but with age, he’s getting older and ailing. Perhaps his healing factor no longer produces baby-soft skin. So we imagined he heals quickly, still, but it leaves a scar. The simple idea was that his body would start to get a little more ravaged with a kind of tattooing of past battles, lacerations that remain of previous conflicts.
Logan opens in theaters March 3, 2017.
