The 2011 - 2012 school year has been a good one for Mater Dei sports. In November the football team played their way to the state title game at Lucas Oil Stadium, coming up short in their quest for state title in a loss to powerhouse, Fort Wayne Bishop-Luers. Then the girls basketball team made the trek up Highway 41 in February to bring home a state title against the aforementioned Bishop-Luers. Even the Super-Mileage team got in on the act with a first place win at the Shell Eco-Challenge. Now the baseball team has the chance to bring home another state crown this weekend.

Based on their regular season record alone, this is a trip very few people, outside of the players and coaches, thought the Wildcats would make. There aren't many 12-13-1 teams that get a shot at a state title, but after taking out defending 2A state champ, South Spencer to win the sectional, the unranked 'Cats took the regional crown with a 12-2 win over Eastern High School out of Pekin, IN (about 45 minutes northwest of Louisville) before knocking fourth ranked Indianapolis Park Tudor out of the running with a 7-2 win in the Jasper Semistate on Saturday.

Now it's on to Victory Field in Indiapolis this Saturday afternoon, where seniors Cody Hess and Hunter Owen, teammates on Mater Dei's aforementioned state runner-up football team, will lead the team into a matchup against the top ranked Norsemen of Northfield High School out of Wabash, IN. Game time is 3pm Evansville time.

As a proud Mater Dei alum, all I can say is, GO WILDCATS!
