Kendrick Lamar Says ‘DAMN.’ Plays Better in Reverse
Following the release of Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN., many listeners noticed the album could be played in reverse with “Duckworth” being the opening track and “Blood” being the closer, and now, during a recent interview, Lamar has suggested the album sounds better in that order.
Speaking with MTV News, Kendrick suggested DAMN. has a “better rhythm” when played in reverse order.
“I think like a week after the album came, [fans] realized you can play the album backwards,” the rapper said. “It plays as a full story and even a better rhythm,” Kendrick added. “It’s one of my favorite rhythms and tempos within the album. It’s something that we definitely premeditate while we’re in the studio.”
While Kendrick doesn’t feel like the story changes when the record is played in reverse, he did say there is a different feel to it. “The initial vibe listening from the top all the way to the bottom is… this aggression and this attitude. You know, ‘DNA,’ and exposing who I really am. You listen from the back end, and it’s almost the duality and the contrast of the intricate Kendrick Lamar. Both of these pieces are who I am.”
Expect Kendrick to perform a track off of DAMN. this weekend when he performs live at the MTV Video Music Awards. The “Loyalty” rapper is nominated for eight awards.
