Kelly Clarkson Demolishes Miley Cyrus’ ‘Wrecking Ball’ in Concert (In The Good Way)
It's official: No pop star is safe from Kelly Clarkson.
The reigning American Idol alum knows how to make quick work of a cover. (It is how she first rose to fame, after all.) And, in keeping with the tradition of her previous tours, Kelly's Fan Request section of the Piece By Piece Tour has prompted some truly unbelievable live renditions of favorites new and old, including Rihanna's "Stay," Taylor Swift's "Blank Space," Tove Lo's "Habits (Stay High)" — even Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling In Love." And yes, it's true that the covers happen each night of the tour, but...well, we just have to keep reporting each new one, because they're all legitimately so good. (We even ranked 11 of the best of them!)
Her latest track to tackle? None other than Parent Group-startling 2015 MTV Video Music Awards host and #InstaPride founder Miley Cyrus and her Bangerz anthem, "Wrecking Ball." A crushing power ballad? One of Mrs. Clarkson-Blackstock's greatest strengths. To no one's surprise, the singer's voice crashed through the devastating break-up jam with ease.
"I actually love this song. This is by Miley Cyrus, and this is called 'Wrecking Ball'...I just have been dying to sing this one," she prefaced the performance during her concert in Noblesville, Indiana.
Like her other covers, Kelly slightly switches up the arrangement to suit her voice (and the acoustic styling of the Fan Request section of the show). She starts off controlled, but just wait until she really lets that voice loose at the song's end. "I never meant to start a war!" Chills abound. Studio version at the end of the concert run, please?
