University of Evansville Presents RENT Musical

I remember hearing about RENT when it hit Broadway back in 1996. It was a massive hit that went on to win the Tony Award for Best Musical that year AND the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It would be several years before I got to experience RENT for myself. My wife and I saw an off-Broadway production in Evansville, and we instantly fell in love with it. You now have the chance to feel what we felt as the University of Evansville Theatre presents it own production of RENT.

What is RENT About?

Even though it won awards back in '96, that was still nearly 30 years ago and you may not know what the musical is actually about. Here's a pretty good summation from dmtc.org...

Set in the East Village of New York City, RENT is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Based loosely on Puccini's La Boheme, Jonathan Larson's Rent follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical.

University of Evansville's Production

RENT is the second installment of the 2023-2024 UE Theatre season, and opens at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 10, in Shanklin Theatre. You can also see it at 7:30 p.m., on November 11, 16, 17, and 18, and also at 2:00 p.m., on November 19.

Tickets are $20 each for adults and $18 for seniors, UE employees, and non-UE students. UE Theatre also offers the "Pay What You Will" option this season. Every Thursday evening performance in Shanklin Theatre is available for any person to pay any price that best fits their budget. Single tickets may be purchased online at theatre.evansville.edu or by calling the ticket office at 812.488.2031, Monday through Friday, 12:00 to 5:00 p.m.
