Mushroom hunting season usually starts in April but there have been sightings in southern Indiana over the past few weeks. That shroom everyone is after is called a morel. You will only find me hunting for mushrooms in the produce section at the grocery store, but please feel free to share your bounty with me.

I'm a member of the Indiana Morel Mushroom Progression group on Facebook, and I have seen a lot of excited Hoosiers sharing pics of their morels. We don't normally see so many active spots this early in the year, but I guess the weather has been just right.

Show Me the Mushroom Receipts

It's sad to think that people would post fake or old photos of morel mushrooms to try and throw off fellow hunters. Yes, this is apparently a real issue among internet mushroom groups. So, some folks show the receipts - literally. To act as a time and date stamp on their finds.

One member of the group actually challenged this photo because there is no year on the phone. Spoiler alert: March 9, 2024, was a Saturday.

I believe there is a golden rule with mushroom hunters: Never share your hunting spot! So, when you start finding your delicious prizes, go ahead and share the photos, but never give out the address.

Where is it legal to hunt mushrooms in Indiana?

As long as you are hunting for yourself, and you are not going to set up a mushroom stand and sell them, these locations are perfectly legal:

  • State Parks
  • State Forests
  • State Fish and Wildlife Areas
  • State Recreational Areas

Check the United States of Agriculture Forest Service site for up-to-date information about the Hoosier National Forest.
