It's pretty common to see a Walgreens on one corner and a CVS on the next. The two pharmacy rivals are now facing more store closures in 2025.
Walgreens Cites Profitability and High Theft as Reasons for Closures
The 1,200-store closure plan stems from Walgreens’ recent struggles with profitability, with about 25% of their stores failing to turn a profit. According to Walgreens CEO Tim Wentworth, the company aims to close locations that are either struggling financially or are close to another Walgreens store. Rising retail theft, which increased for many businesses during the pandemic, has also been a factor, though Walgreens admits that theft alone isn’t the root of their challenges.

In recent years, competition from online retailers like Amazon, as well as big-box stores like Walmart and Costco, has impacted Walgreens’ profitability, especially in the sale of everyday household goods. As more customers purchase items online, Walgreens and similar drug stores have found it harder to maintain foot traffic, leading to the decision to downsize. The Walgreens at 2015 Covert Ave in Evansville officially closed on December 15, 2024. Now, there are more cuts across the bridge.
