I've heard it said that the only constant is change. That is true for just about everyone and everything including stores like Walmart who have several major changes coming to Missouri and Illinois stores in the future.

I saw this interesting peek into the near and also distant future by Best Life which says that Walmart is in the process of making major changes and that includes the Missouri and Illinois stores. Some of these changes are either already in progress or have already been made in some locations while others are likely to begin appearing over the next few years.

What's changing at Missouri and Illinois Walmart stores?

1. Single-use bags are being discontinued

This is a big change as the bags you use and then toss have already been discontinued in a dozen states and more are to come. In a press release a few years ago, Walmart said it was going to "reinvent the plastic bag" and that process has begun. This change will eventually impact Missouri & Illinois Walmart stores, too.

2. Stores of the future being implemented

Starting late in 2022, Walmart started converting some stores to what they call stores of the future with features like "digital displays, bathroom and bedroom displays, and more national brands." They say that 1,000 stores have already begun this changeover to being "more interactive".

3. More items being locked in cases

In an effort to stop the increase of shoplifting, Walmart is beginning to implement locked cases for products previously available on shelves. They indicated that they needed to take these steps or some stores would have to be closed.

4. Expanded beauty departments

Walmart launched a new brand that's only available in their stores called Olive & June. It's a nail care product that launched in June and is part of their expansion of many health and beauty departments in their stores.
