Spring Tease Then a Big Weather Flip

Have you been loving these 60-70 degree temperatures the past few days? I have been really sick, so I have barely left my bed, but I am finally feeling better today. I plan on heading out to see my horse before anyone else gets to the barn.

I am going earlier rather than later because it is supposed to drop about FIFTY DEGREES today. Yikes stripes!

Temperatures Swing Nearly 50 Degrees

Today’s high will be around 71, with a low near 22. Mother Nature hit the brakes like she spotted a state trooper. A strong cold front is blowing through and bringing winter back in a big way, and with that drastic change comes the potential for severe weather.

Strong Cold Front Moving Through the Quad State

A powerful cold front will move through the Quad State area this afternoon and evening. Ahead of the front, south winds could gust around 35 mph, with a few gusts nearing 40 mph.

A line of showers and a few thunderstorms will move in with the front and could produce brief higher wind gusts. After the front passes, winds will quickly shift to the west and then northwest, with gusts up to 35 mph possible through or just after midnight. Temperatures will fall quickly this evening and overnight.

Severe Weather Risk Today

According to the National Weather Service, our area is currently under a Marginal to Slight Risk for severe weather.

The I-64 corridor has been upgraded to a Slight Risk, which is a 2 out of 5 level, for late this afternoon and evening. Damaging winds are the main concern, but a few tornadoes are possible, especially in the Slight Risk area. The primary window to watch is 3 PM to 9 PM CST.

What a Slight Risk Means

A Slight Risk means storms may be more organized and possibly intense, though not widespread. The main threats include damaging wind gusts that can exceed 60 mph, large hail that could be an inch or two in diameter, and a low chance of an isolated tornado or two.
