Visiting the Indiana BMV Can Be a Gamble

If you've ever had to visit an Indiana BMV, you know it can feel like a gamble. Sometimes you wait an hour and a half, and other times you’re in and out in five minutes. When I first moved to Indiana, I was shocked to find out I had to take a written exam to get my license here, even though I was already licensed in Kentucky. Let’s just say I spent more than a few hours of my life waiting in line.

Services Available at Indiana BMV Locations

According to Indiana.gov, here are some of the services available at BMV branches:

• Knowledge exams*
• Commercial driver license
• New driver license, learner permit, or identification card**
• Renew driver license, learner permit, or identification card
• Amend a current driver license, learner permit, or identification card
• Replacement driver license, learner permit, or identification card
• Title transfer
• Update to an existing title
• New registration
• Disability placard
• Registration renewal
• Registration amendment
• Duplicate registration
• Duplicate title
• Kiosks and Online Options Save Time

To help decrease wait times, the state has added 24-hour kiosks for simple tasks like registrations, driver’s license renewals, printing records, updating contact info, paying fees, and ordering duplicate titles.

You can also complete several tasks online, including:

• Vehicle registrations
• Driver’s license renewals
• Viewing your driving record
• Paying fees
• Updating contact info
• Ordering a duplicate title
• Scheduling appointments
• Viewing branch wait times

The Evansville East BMV Has Moved

Thankfully, the BMV has worked to add more services that help cut down wait times. And now, the Evansville East Side BMV is on the move. According to a Facebook post on September 23, the branch has relocated from its longtime home on Virginia Street to a new spot that is not far away. The hope is that this new location makes it easier for residents to get their BMV tasks handled quickly and efficiently.

A Quick Tip

If you've made it this far into my article, I'll share a quick time-saving tip with you. If you check the BMV wait time and it's too long, run over to a BMV location right outside of Evansville such as Boonville or Princeton. I have never waited more than five minutes to be seen, the people are so nice, and I don't feel like it's me and 55 of my fellow Hoosiers all stuffed into a small hot room waiting for the kiosk. Just be sure to check hours as the staff travels around and smaller branches aren't open every day.
