A Taste of Tradition: What’s New at Reid’s Orchard?
If I say the word, "apple," what's the first thing that comes to mind? If you live in the area, I would bet money your answer is Reid's Orchard.
For over 150 years, the Reid family has been providing fresh and delicious produce for Daviess County and beyond. I think we all have special memories of visits to pick strawberries or enjoy apple slushies either as kids or with our kids or both!
They've grown so much over the years, now offering Katie's gorgeous flowers, yummy baked goods, gifts, fun family events when the weather is nice, and so much more. Now that the weather is getting nicer, it is the perfect time to stop out for a visit.
You may see Mr. Billy Reid, Brad, and the crew out planting new apple orchards. They are working on putting 900 trees in the ground on each acre to eventually offer more varieties of apples. This should result in harvesting 1000 bushels per acre. Katie Reid Clark told me, "We used to only plant 350 per acre, but this new way of training the trees on a trellis allows us to plant more and have higher yields."

She also shared that "'sweet tart crisp' all in one bite" has become a highly requested flavor combination amongst the 30 varieties they already grow. I have to admit, that's my favorite too! So, that will be the theme for these new orchards.
"We still have your old-fashioned Yellow Delicious, Fuji, Gala, Red Delicious, Jonathan, and Granny Smith." Added to the mix will be: Ever Crisp (the perfect balance of sweet & tart), Sweet Crisp (super crunchy & sweet), Johnny Star (Katie says this is going to be a new favorite in the making), Far Storm, and Ambrosia.
"It will be two years before the trees we are planting this year will be ready," Katie told me, "We're planting new orchards every year so each year we have a new one ready to harvest." Definitely something to look forward to! Follow Reid's Orchard on Facebook to watch their progress and plan your next visit.
