What Is The Spirit Medical Fund?

The Spirit Medical Fund helps with medical care expenses for stray, homeless and abandoned animals that arrive at Evansville-Vanderburgh Animal Care & Control. From Evansvillegov.org:

The SPIRIT MEDICAL FUND was established after a brave little dachshund mix, later named Spirit, survived a horrific ordeal of animal cruelty.  Spirit was found at the [Oak] Hill Cemetery around Halloween 2000.  She had been doused with gasoline, set on fire, and left to die.  When found, she was close to death.  Although she was in very poor health, she still had the will to live.  In order for this to be possible, she needed costly medical treatments.  The community reached out and provided us with the needed money.  This was the beginning of the SPIRIT MEDICAL FUND.

How Can You Help?

Responsible pet owners are invited to bring their special 4-legged friend to the 4th Annual Howl O’ Ween at Oak Hill Cemetery on October 29th, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The suggested donation to participate in the event is $5. A Halloween Costume Contest will begin at 11:30 a.m. The suggested donation to take part in the contest is $5. All proceeds will be benefiting the Spirit Medical Fund.

The public is encouraged to come out and support Howl O’ Ween. If you do not own a little furry friend, you can still enjoy the day. There will be dogs and cats from Animal Care and Control that will be available for “temporary” adoption for the afternoon. Who knows?! You may find your new best friend!

“This is a great event for all the animal lovers within Evansville and other surrounding areas,” said Evansville Superintendent of Cemeteries Chris Cooke. “It’s the perfect opportunity to donate money and show support for all the animals in need.”
