What a Teal Pumpkin Means When Trick-or-Treating in Evansville
If you see a teal colored pumpkin near the door of someone's home while trick-or-treating, odds are it isn't just for show.
The Teal Pumpkin Project is an initiative that's determined to get the word out to trick-or-treaters that your home has non-food treats.
Wait...no candy?
That's right - but it's all for good reason. The purpose of the Teal Pumpkin Project is to allow kids with food allergies, celiac disease, diabetes, food intolerances and other special diets to trick-or-treat without fear. Instead of getting candy that could contain nuts or other allergens, the trick-or-treaters are given small toys or other non-food treats.
Pretty neat, right? This not only prevents possibly devastating outcomes for children with food allergies, but it also gives parents a break. Instead of combing through a night's worth of candy and picking out the good pieces from the bad, they can rest assured that their kid won't be exposed to any allergens.
So, all you have to do is substitute some of your candy (which will save you some money anyway) with some little toys or gadgets and hand them out to the trick-or-treaters with food allergies. This makes Halloween fun for everyone! Trust me, the parents will also be thankful that someone considered their child during what is supposed to be a fun experience for everyone.
I hadn't heard of this before, but I think I'll consider painting a teal pumpkin this year. We don't get very many trick-or-treaters since we live kind of far out, but maybe having a teal pumpkin will attract some more kiddos to my doorstep!
