Should Marvel Have Taken More of a Break After Endgame?

Nerd ALERT!!!   Okay, now that that is out of the way.  Let’s get right to it.

Over the weekend my fiancé and I finally went back to the movie theater.  It was great.  What was the first movie we saw post-pandemic?  Why Marvel’s Black Widow of course!  First of all, the movie was really good.  I mean it is Marvel and how often do they disappoint these days?  However, after the movie was over and I made Heidi sit through the credits for the famous Marvel post-credit scene, we had an interesting conversation.

Now, obviously, my fiancé is not as invested in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as I am.  But she did make a really good point as we were leaving the theater.  “How long are they going to keep making these movies like this?  Is there ever going to be a definitive end?” she said.  I’ll admit I was taken aback by this.  The nerd inside me wanted to say “Uh, no way these things need to go on forever.”  But as I thought about it I kind of had to acknowledge that she was making some sense.

The ten-year span of Marvel movies that have now become known as the Infinity Saga was truly cinematic genius.  The wherewithal to create an interwoven universe like this does need to be commended.  I mean putting together all the different characters and stories was no easy task but they pulled it off and capped it off in epic fashion.

Avengers: Endgame was, in my opinion, the best way to wrap up the whole story that started back in 2008 with the first Iron Man.  So, why not stop there?  At least for a little bit….

This question ended up being something I thought about a few times this weekend.  Why?  Well, because, duh, I’m a nerd.  Also, because I do feel as though I am getting a bit worn out with the tidal wave that is Marvel.  Think about it; not only do you need to be up to date with all the movies, but you also need to make sure you have seen all the new Disney+ shows.  If you miss out on anything now, you will be way lost until you catch up.  It didn’t use to feel that way.  You could miss a couple of movies here and there and could still enjoy the big climax that was the Avengers movies.

All I am saying is that I think a period of time with no Marvel movie or TV show would have been okay.  You leave fans with the epic conclusion that was Endgame and step away for a couple of years.  You caught lightning in a bottle with the Infinity Saga.  I’m not quite sure that can happen again.  We needed time to digest the first course before we started on the next.

I'll say this to put a bow on this whole conversation; I still think what Marvel is doing is still good storytelling.  They still have my attention, obviously.  But I do think there needs to be a definitive end for this universe at some point.
