When my daughter was four, a family friend offered us a kitten. We hyped her up for the day that Chaos the Kitten would arrive. We were ready with kitten food, a litter box, and lots of toys. At the last second, the family friend changed their mind and decided to keep Chaos. What to do? Well, drive around to every adoption facility in the tri-state to find a kitten, of course.

At the first place we went, they had a whole room full of kittens but one named Travis really sucked up to her big time. He was scroungy with crusty eyes. His adoption fee was over $200. We talked about it being a lifetime commitment so she had to be sure. We looked at 50ish cats that day. Travis had an adoption fee of over $200, while some were in the $20 range.

Guess who she picked... Yep, $200+ ditch kitty. I almost choked when I handed over my credit card.

Adoption fees can be pricey - and don't get me wrong, they are worth every penny. The pets come fully fixed and vetted and your adoption fee goes toward keeping longer residents alive at no-kill shelters. But I still died a little inside the "buy" this crusty-eyed little ditch kitty for a cool $230. You can't put a price on your kid's happiness, right?
