In an effort to manage the population of both snow and Ross's geese across Indiana, a Light Goose Conservation Order will open up across the state allowing for hunting of these animals outside of the normal hunting season.

Before you grab your shotgun and head out looking for geese, there are a few more things you are going to need and we aren't talking about a blind or an orange vest. To take part in the Light Goose Conservation Order, you will need a valid Indiana hunting license, along with an Indiana waterfowl stamp privilege, and a Light Goose Conservation Order permit, which you can get for free through the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

You're still not quite ready to head out hunting though. You want to be sure that you are only hunting white or blue phase snow and Ross's geese between February 14, 2022, and March 31, 2022. You also want to be 100% certain that what you are shooting at is a snow or Ross's goose so you can remain compliant with the order.

You do not want to accidentally shoot a whooping crane which the Indiana DNR says inhabit many of the same areas as snow geese during the fall and winter months. These large white birds stand at approximately five feet in height and have black tips on their wings making them look similar to snow geese. Shooting a Whooping crane is a serious offense as the birds are federally protected as an endangered species - do not shoot one of these birds.

There are some other things Indiana DNR wants you to know before you head out to hunt for white or blue phase snow and Ross's geese,

  • Shooting hours are from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset.
  • It is legal to take light geese during the conservation order using electronic callers and/or shotguns capable of holding more than three shells.
  • There is no bag or possession limit for light geese during the conservation order.

There are no bag limits or possession limits imposed for light geese during the conservation order dates of February 14th through March 31st. It is also worth noting that you do not need a federal duck stamp or HIP registration to participate in the Light Goose Conservation Order. In the event that you take any banded geese, it is asked that you report those bands at www.reportband.gov/.
