Jesse T. Usher is back to the big screen as the son of legendary private eye Shaft... can you dig it?

The Survivor's Remorse lead actor has been chosen to play the descendant of John Shaft in Son of Shaft, a film that will begin shooting later this year.  The movie will be directed by Fantastic Four director Tim Story, and is written by Black-ish showrunner Kenya Barris.

The original Shaft was made in 1971 by Gordon Parks, starring Richard Roundtree. In 2000, John Singleton re-booted the classic in which Samuel L. Jackson played the character of John Shaft, the nephew of the original 70s operative (Roundtree). Now, in 2017, Jesse T. Usher will play the son of the detective John Shaft (Jackson).  Roundtree is also tapped to appear in the film.

Usher will play an FBI agent and cyber expert who has been distanced from his father for most of his life. Suddenly, the two reunite and form a crime fighting partnership that proves to be a constant conflict of old school verses new school.

Apparently the filmmakers had been searching for months to find the right actor before deciding that Jesse was the perfect guy for the role.  Independence Day: Resurgence (2016) has been Usher's biggest role to date.  He's perhaps best known as the lead of the Starz series Survivor’s Remorse, with it's fourth season premiering on August 20.

The film is being brought to you by New Line Cinema. No release date has been set as of yet.
