J. Cole and Dr. Dre Spotted in the Studio Together
It was only four days ago (July 6) that J. Cole kicked off his highly anticipated 4 Your Eyez Only tour, and we're already receiving word about him being back in the studio—with a music mogul, no less.
While Cole was busy making an iconic entrance during the tour's first leg in Phoenix, Ariz., Dem Jointz, a producer who's worked with Kendrick Lamar and Rihanna in the past, shared a photo of the "Neighbors" lyricist that has since gone viral. In it, Dem Jointz is accompanied by Cole, Mell Beets, King Mez, J.LBS and hip-hop heavyweight Dr. Dre. As if the rappers and producers in the Instagram pic weren't enough, Dem also left the caption "Blue Lights," leading fans to speculate a new track or project is on the way from the two rap favorites. Hopefully it'll be both, unless he was being literal in regards to the photo's backdrop.
Between new music and touring, both Dr. Dre and J. Cole have been heavy on the music scene as of late. Last night, Dre premiered he and Jimmy Iovine's Defiant Ones documentary, a series detailing their move from Interscope Records to Apple Music. The doc's director, Allen Hughes, spoke to XXL about the process that went behind it all, most interestingly the vulnerability he was able to pry out of the two esteemed producers.
"Jimmy and Dre actually led with if we don’t show the good, the bad and the ugly, why are we doing this,." Hughes told us. "If you see it in the film, I just left [those uncomfortable parts] in there. You can see Dre visibly uncomfortable when it came to his brother. We ironically shot the situation with Dee Barnes a couple of years ago. He wanted to touch on that. It wasn’t easy for him to get into the violence and the abuse in his life."
In another interview, Hughes confirmed Dre is back in the lab with Eminem, who is pretty close to finishing up an album. "Right now he’s producing, in the 11th hour, a track for Eminem’s latest album. So Dre’s still real active in music, you know?," he told Uproxx.
Dre also premiered new music in the Defiant Ones doc. The song is called "Gunfiyah," and sounds like it could be written by Kendrick Lamar, or King Mez, or maybe even Jon Connor.
