How Do Local Property Tax Rates Compare to the Rest of Indiana?
Where Do Our Property Taxes Rank?
You probably know that the primary election is here in Indiana, and we also just wrapped up tax season, so let's talk about it. A topic of conversation this season is property taxes. It’s something a lot of us feel every year when that bill shows up, but how do we actually compare to the rest of the state?
Since I'm a new resident of the state of Indiana, I was curious how it differs from my home state of Illinois. Glancing through the property tax list, I wanted to highlight the counties we live in and see where we fall in them. It's a hot-button issue right now.
Let’s start with Vanderburgh County. Depending on how you measure it, property taxes here land pretty close to the middle of the pack statewide. The effective property tax rate is around 0.74% to just over 1%, which is right in line with Indiana’s average.
That means homeowners here aren’t paying the highest rates in Indiana, but we’re not at the very bottom either. In fact, some data shows local tax districts in Vanderburgh County can even come in slightly above the state median, depending on where you live.
Now, over in Warrick County, the story is a little different. Property tax rates there are generally considered moderate to slightly lower than average. In some areas, effective rates are around 0.75%, while others range from 1.3% to 1.8%, depending on the township and school district.
So overall, Warrick County tends to land a bit lower than or comparable to the state average, especially in places like Newburgh.
Across Indiana’s 92 counties, property taxes vary quite a bit. The statewide median property tax bill is around $1,200 a year, and overall, Indiana is still considered a lower property tax state compared to the national average.
Why It Matters Right Now
So why are we concerned now? Well, with voters heading to the polls, property taxes are often front and center in local conversations. While neither Vanderburgh nor Warrick County ranks among the highest-taxed counties in Indiana, small differences in rates and how that money is spent can still have a big impact on homeowners.
So as election season heats up, it’s one of those pocketbook issues that’s worth paying attention to because where your county ranks can directly affect what you pay every year.
