Starting the Year the Way I Love Best — Outside

If you know me, you know I love to hike, move my body, and just be outside in the world. So when I learned that Lincoln State Park has a tradition built around exactly that, I instantly wished I had known about it sooner. If your New Year’s resolution is to get outside more, this might be the perfect inspiration.

A Nationwide Tradition I Just Discovered

Lincoln State Park hosts an annual 'First Day Hike', a nationwide event that encourages people to start the new year with fresh air, movement, and nature. I didn’t even realize this was a national thing until now, but how cool is that? The park has been part of the tradition for eight years, and this year’s turnout was especially impressive.

When the Weather Cooperates, Hoosiers Show Up

According to Interpretive Naturalist Michael Crews, turnout usually lands between 60 and 80 hikers depending on the weather. There was even one brutally cold year when only ten brave souls made it out — but this year, the sunshine made all the difference. Between 100 and 250 people showed up ready to hit the trails together.

A Trail for Everyone

Hikers took on a two-mile walk along the Civilian Conservation Corps Trail, which highlights some of the park’s best views and is welcoming for all skill levels. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or just looking for a peaceful walk in the woods, this trail really has something for everyone.

Hiking First… Hoosiers Game After

Several participants shared they were just happy to start the year on a positive note — and maybe sneak in some IU pride afterward. One group said it best: get the hike in, then head home to watch the big Hoosiers game. Honestly, that feels like the perfect New Year’s Day balance.

Missed the First Day Hike? Same.

If you’re like me and missed the First Day Hike, no worries at all. Lincoln State Park hosts a hike every Saturday in Spencer County. And who knows — you might spot some wildlife, find a new favorite trail, or discover a little outdoor space that becomes your safe haven for the year ahead. 🌿
