Labor Day falls on Monday, September 7, 2026, and several offices and services around Evansville will be taking the day off, too.

So, before you make a trip across town only to pull into an empty parking lot — or wonder why your trash is still sitting at the curb here’s what you need to know about Labor Day closures in the Evansville area.

Evansville City and Vanderburgh County Offices Will Be Closed

If you have any government business you've been putting off, Monday probably isn't going to be the day to finally tackle it.

City of Evansville offices will be closed for Labor Day, along with Vanderburgh County government offices.

That means you'll either want to take care of anything you need before the holiday weekend or plan on waiting until offices reopen Tuesday.

Evansville Water and Sewer Utility Offices Will Be Closed

The Evansville Water and Sewer Utility business offices will also be closed Monday for the holiday.

However, that doesn't mean you're on your own if something goes wrong. Water and sewer emergency services will still be available throughout Labor Day. If you experience a water or sewer emergency, you can call **812-421-2130**.

Regular EWSU business hours are expected to resume Tuesday, September 8.

Your Evansville Trash Pickup Will Be Delayed

This is probably the closure you'll want to make a mental note of now because nothing says "I forgot it was a holiday" quite like staring at your full trash can and wondering where the truck is.

Republic Services will not operate on Labor Day, which means trash and recycling collection will be pushed back.

If your normal pickup day is Monday, collection will begin Tuesday, September 8, with crews continuing through Saturday to complete the week's routes.

So, don't panic if your trash truck shows up a day later than you're used to seeing it.

EVPL Locations Will Be Closed for Labor Day

Planning to spend your day off wandering around the library? You'll have to save that trip for Tuesday.

All Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library locations will be closed Monday, September 7, in observance of Labor Day.

That includes services you would normally need to visit a branch for, but you aren't completely cut off from the library for the day. EVPL's digital resources are available 24/7, so you can still access digital books and other materials from home.

Honestly, a book from the couch isn't a bad way to spend a day off anyway.

Don't Expect Mail on Monday

Waiting for a package or planning to stop by the post office? Keep the holiday in mind.

The United States Postal Service observes Labor Day, meaning local post offices will be closed Monday and there will be no regular mail delivery.

If you need to visit the counter or get something important in the mail, you'll want to take care of it before the holiday or wait until Tuesday.

Indiana BMV Branches Will Be Closed

I don't know how many people were planning to spend their Labor Day at the BMV, but if that was somehow on your agenda, you'll need a new plan.

Indiana BMV branches will be closed Monday in observance of the state holiday. Regular branch operations are expected to resume Tuesday.

Indiana Courts and State Offices Will Also Be Closed

The closures don't stop at the local level.

Indiana state government offices and Indiana Judicial Branch offices will also be closed Monday. Labor Day on September 7 is listed as an official state holiday for 2026.

If you have business involving a state office or court, plan on waiting until after the holiday.

Will Evansville Stores and Restaurants Be Open on Labor Day?

Now for the good news: Labor Day doesn't mean everything in Evansville shuts down.

Many restaurants, grocery stores and major retailers are typically open on Labor Day. However, individual locations may choose to operate on reduced or special holiday hours.

Emergency services, including police, fire and EMS, will continue operating throughout the holiday.

Basically, if your Monday plans involve city or county government, the library, the post office, BMV or state offices, you're probably going to have to wait until Tuesday. And if Monday is normally trash day at your house, don't be surprised when that schedule shifts.
