ECHO Launches New HONOR Program for Evansville Veterans

A new program in Evansville is expanding the way our community supports veterans, military families, and neighbors who may need a little extra help finding their next step toward stability.

What Is the HONOR Program?

ECHO Housing & Community Development has officially launched the HONOR Program, which stands for Helping Others Navigate Opportunity and Recovery. The program is designed to connect veterans, their families, and members of the Southwest Indiana community with resources that can help remove barriers and create a stronger path forward.

Building on ECHO's Work With Veterans

HONOR builds on ECHO’s successful work through the U.S. Department of Labor’s Homeless Veterans’ Reintegration Program, which helped veterans experiencing homelessness return to meaningful employment. Since 2012, ECHO has provided housing, employment support, and other services to more than 1,300 veterans across Southwest Indiana.

While finding a job remains an important part of the program, HONOR takes a bigger-picture approach by helping people with the challenges that can make long-term success difficult. That could include finding stable housing, arranging transportation, enrolling in benefits, accessing basic needs, or connecting with community resources.

Who Can Get Help Through HONOR?

The program is focused on serving veterans, but it also expands support to veteran spouses and children, military caregivers, National Guard and Reserve members, military families, veterans who may not have qualified for previous federal programs, and other community members who could benefit from resource navigation.

HONOR will also take over coordination of the Totes for Hope initiative through a partnership with the American Red Cross. The program provides veterans with totes filled with hygiene supplies and other essentials while also creating opportunities to connect them with additional support services.

By expanding eligibility and offering preventative assistance, ECHO hopes HONOR can help veterans and families before they reach a crisis point.

The program will continue working alongside the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, employers, healthcare providers, social service agencies, and other community partners to strengthen opportunities for housing stability, employment, and overall well-being throughout Southwest Indiana.
