Ten Years Later And 2016 Still Hits Us With Nostalgia
Wait… That Is Turning 10 Years Old in 2026?!
If 2016 still feels like “just a few years ago” to you, I hate to be the one to break it to you but some of our favorite songs, movies, apps, and pop culture moments are officially turning 10 years old in 2026. And yes… I also needed a minute to process that. I remember a lot of these things coming out being a big hit in high school for me. Which is a new reality of shock I have not faced before... so let's go back to what was trending and coming out in 2016.
The Songs That Lived on Every Playlist
2016 gave us music we absolutely wore out but are still fan favorites today.
This was the year “Closer” by The Chainsmokers was everywhere — in cars, at parties, and probably stuck in your head right now. Rihanna’s “Work” ruled the radio, and Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” became an instant feel-good anthem. If you were driving around with the windows down that summer, one of these was definitely playing.
Movies That Had Us Quoting Lines for Years
Some iconic movies are hitting double digits too.
Finding Dory swam into theaters, which was a big one for Pixar and Disney fans since we were waiting for a Finding Nemo sequel for over ten years. Then there's Deadpool that changed superhero movies forever, and another movie that had musical lovers in a chokehold was La La Land that had everyone either obsessed… or debating that ending. Ten years later, and they’re still comfort watches.
Apps That Completely Changed How We Use Our Phones
This one hurts a little especially how much I use some of these to this day.
Instagram Stories launched in 2016, completely changing how we share our lives online. Pokémon GO had us all outside, wandering neighborhoods and parks like it was our full-time job. I still have stories I will never forget about people and that app. Even Snapchat filters were having their moment — dog ears included. Not to mention the big one that took over the internent, our phones, and even people's lives and their opportunity to have a full time job through this platform and that is TikTok. I know right?! TikTok!
Events We’ll Never Forget
2016 also gave us moments we still talk about.
Harambe was killed. The Chicago Cubs finally won the World Series, breaking a 108-year curse. The Rio Olympics brought unforgettable performances, and pop culture moments from that year still live rent-free in our minds.
So… Are We Feeling Old Yet?
Ten years later, it’s wild how much from 2016 still feels like yesterday. Whether it was a song you overplayed, a movie you loved, or an app you still use daily, 2016 really left its mark.
Now I feel like I should unlock the reality of what happened 20 years since 2026.
