This Louisville Zoo Gorilla is Famous for His Love of Smart Phones

Several years ago, my family went to a birthday celebration at the Louisville Zoo. It was at the party room on the second floor of the Orangutan house where one entire wall is glass so that you can watch the giant adorable apes swing around the enclosure. It also meant that the Orangutans had some entertainment. Rollins and his friends!

They loved to hang in front of the window and watch the kids dance, and sing, and when it came time to open presents, one of them was so curious, that he dominated the prime seating to get a closer look at the birthday girl's gifts. Hands down one of the coolest parties ever.

It is so incredible to see these intelligent beings acting like humans and being interested in the same things we are. Although science says we evolved from an ape-like species, we often consider apes "just animals." They are way more similar to us than we give them credit for. Especially the apes at the Louisville Zoo for some reason.

This Orangutan for instance motioned at a grandmother holding her infant grandson to come over so it could see him better! You can see it pressing its lips to the glass for a smooch.

I'm not certain, but taking a look at the Louisville Zoo website, this might be sweet Amber. "Amber is known for her playful personality. She enjoys interacting with guests and may tap the glass to grab the attention of those nearby, pointing out sparkling accessories, brightly colored fingernails, or gesturing towards a purse or backpack to see what’s inside." This next video is hilarious. The Orangutan is infatuated with this woman's purse and motions for her to open it up. Curious as to what is inside, once it realizes there is a potential snack, it shows the woman where to put the fruit gummies so they can get it!

The Orangutans in Louisville aren't the only ones to have some fun. Jelani is one of the "Bachelors" in the Gorilla family at the Louisville Zoo. "Our International superstar and YouTube sensation due to his fascination with cell phones. Jelani was born at Lincoln Park Zoo in 1997 and arrived at Louisville Zoo in 2002. He is the oldest gorilla in the bachelor group and can be identified by his long face. Jelani can often be seen looking through the exhibit glass at guests’ cellphone photos."

He loves hanging out with people and watching videos or looking at pictures on their devices.
