If you want to add a precious furry family member to your crew, now is the perfect time. Our friends at Saving Paws Animal Rescue of Kentucky are hosting the Bissell Pet Foundation's Empty the Shelter event.

As you know, Sparky is constantly taking in animals from area shelters. Whether it's because those kennels are all full or the dog or cat needs a little extra love, volunteers will nurse them back to health, foster them, fix them, vaccinate them, and find them a forever home.

“Shelters continue to struggle in 2025, with more pets entering than leaving. But together, we have the power to change the story,” said Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation, in a press release. “Our National Empty the Shelters events bring attention to the pets of every breed, size, and type waiting in shelters across the country."

Through October 15th, pet adoption fees will be greatly reduced. Adoptable cats at Sparky will be available for $60, and dogs (there are a few excluded) will be available for $70. When I adopted our sweet Duane, he was $200 and worth every penny, but this is a heck of a deal.

Especially when you look at the sweet faces waiting so patiently to leave the rescue and find their own home. Here are some of the dogs you can adopt at a reduced rate over the next couple of weeks. If I have met them before, I will tell you a little about them too.

"Each adoption gives a pet a second chance, eases the burden on shelters, and inspires more people to get involved. When you adopt, you become part of a lifesaving movement," Bissell said. There are lots more on the list, looking for a soft and loving place to land. If my house were bigger, Sir Duke would come home with me in an instant!
