Since the winter storm hit Sunday morning, I've driven out of my subdivision three times. And every time, while moving slowly and navigating possibly treacherous terrain, I've seen kids with sleds marching from one location to another.

If I had some time and enough clothing, it would be a blast to do what they're doing. Of course, these days, I'd be looking for a shallower incline, but I have no doubt it would be just as much fun as it was when I went flying down the big hill next to Rose Hill Cemetery. It was across New Hartford Road and Breckenridge Street from my neighborhood when I was growing up. It's no longer there, replaced over the decades by doctor's buildings. But there are multiple other options, and you should take advantage of them if you can.

Chautauqua Park Hill - Owensboro

This one is a local legend...dare I say ICONIC, even. You want steep? At Chautauqua, you GET steep, and that's always been the way. My MOTHER enjoyed Chautauqua Hill back in the 1940s. It's probably at the top of everyone's list in Owensboro.

Chautauqua even has a "degree of difficulty" hill. They know what they've got on their hands. Visit Owensboro also recommends the Summit, Ben Hawes State Park, and Yellow Creek Park.

Reitz Hill - Evansville

Maybe you're a professional hill sledder and have no problem hopping in the 4-wheel drive and making a mini-road trip out of it. If you're in Evansville, you now have the lowdown on Owensboro's best offerings. If you're in Owensboro, and you want to head to Evansville, it doesn't get much better than Reitz Hill.

(By the way, the north side of Reitz High School has one of the best views of downtown Evansville I've ever seen.)

Lynn Hill - Lynnville

In nearby Lynnville, folks have been enjoying Lynn Hill for years.

Stay warm, be safe, and have fun.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Please don't sled on private property, and always make sure your sledding paths are clear of obstacles.

Snow Day! See Photos of Country Stars + Their Kiddos Playing in the Snow

Monday (Jan. 15) was an unusually wintry day in Nashville, with several inches piling up. Snow like this doesn't come around Middle Tennessee often, so of course country stars, their kids and even their pets had to get out and play!
